Reports state that over 90% of computers are infected with spyware.
Most people nowadays have at least one computer, some more, so just think about the increased chance of spyware if you don't have a anti spyware program in place.
If you surf the web, receive emails or download music, for example,then you have probably encountered some form of spyware lurking on your computer. I don't think some people realise the harmful effects of spyware or how it works.
Here is just a few examples,
- it can run on your computer behind the scenes without you knowing it has been installed;
- your computer can begin to run really slow;
- it can log everything you type and send this information to the programmer of that particular spyware program;
- it can take not of every website you visit allowing the programmer to view your browsing history;
- it can record personal information like passwords and credit card numbers and leave you vulnerable to identity theft;
- and it can take files, pictures etc from your hard drive.
Not all spyware programs are the same therefore some will not do much and others will do everything in the examples above and more.
It is beneficial to have a good spyware security system in place to decrease your risk of suffering any of the effects in the list above.
Many people start of with a free anti spyware program. A popular and industry favourite is Spyware Search and Destroy. If you have an anti-virus program, don't assume it will find spyware. Instead be on the safe side and install and run software specifically for finding spyware.
